The central message of the conference was clear – waste can no longer be seen solely as an environmental problem. With appropriate collection, treatment and recycling systems, it represents an important source of secondary raw materials and one of the foundations of the development of the circular economy.

Through its participation, the ZEOS eco-system has drawn special attention to electrical and electronic waste – e-waste – as a resource whose potential has not yet been sufficiently recognized.

Old computers, mobile phones, refrigerators, televisions, power tools, small household appliances and other electrical and electronic equipment contain numerous materials that can be returned to production flows with proper treatment.

This is why it is crucial that e-waste does not end up in mixed municipal waste, in illegal landfills or outside controlled streams.

From e-waste to new resources

The circular economy is based on the idea that products and materials remain in use for as long as possible, and when they become waste, their valuable components and materials are reused.

This is why proper electronic waste management has a double benefit: we protect the environment from inadequate disposal, but at the same time we enable the return of valuable materials to new production cycles.

The conference emphasized that responsible waste management can reduce the consumption of primary raw materials, contribute to the decarbonization of industry, open space for new investments and increase the competitiveness of the economy.

To achieve such a system, clear regulations, appropriate infrastructure, efficient institutional supervision and cooperation between institutions, the economy, system operators and citizens are needed.

The system of proper disposal of e-waste in FBiH exists

One of the key messages of the ZEOS eco-system is that citizens and companies in the Federation of BiH already have the opportunity to hand over their electrical and electronic waste through an organized system of its proper disposal.

ZEOS continuously develops a network of possibilities for the handover of e-waste and, through cooperation with collectors, local communities, companies and other partners, enables its collection and directing towards authorized treatment and recycling flows.

In this way, devices that have reached the end of their lifespan do not just become a problem that needs to be eliminated – they become a source of materials that can gain new value.

This is exactly what the circular economy is all about.
